Jul 24 – This weekend’s adventure is just our 3rd adventure trip to the northern side of Cebu province. Our destination was the Esoy hot spring in Catmon, Cebu. This place is one of the most popular tourist spot in municipality of Catmon. You might ask why this is called Esoy Hot Spring, well, this is because “esoy” is the nickname of the person who started and developed the area. He is actually one of the councilors of the municipality.
The Travel to Esoy Hot Spring in Catmon, Cebu
Catmon is a municipality of Cebu province located at the northern side approximately 50KM from Cebu City. From the town proper going to the intersection going to barangay duyan, where the hot spring is located, its approximately 7KM and from the intersection / national highway going up to the hot spring is approximately 5KM so your total travel distance is around 62KM. It took us around 2 and a half hours to get to Esoy Hot Springs. We where driving very slow (… i know …) and we did some stop over to buy food for our lunch at Lilo-an town proper. (You can actually buy lechon, sea foods like grilled fish, sea orchins, sea shells and other sea foods near the Lilo-an church). Driving going to the site is a bit challenging since the road is too narrow, like the one we drove when we had our eco-farm adventure a week ago at Danasan Eco-Farm. At the site, after we parked our ride, we have to go down on a 200+ step stairs before we can get to our cottage/table and add few more steps, still going down, before you get to the hot spring. I lost count after arriving at the first cottage while talking to the care takers of the site though, so I would just make an estimate of a total of 220 steps from the parking area going to the hot spring pool.
The Adventures offered by Esoy Hot springs
Going down alone is already an adventure. For those who are not used to doing trekking, it is really challenging to go down to the 440+ (give and take) number of steps in going down and up (back and forth). Aside from that, and the real or featured adventure of the place is the trekking to the water falls.
After arriving at the area, we grabbed our sea foods lunch and the famous cebu/sugbu lechon that we bought in the municipality of Lilo-an. After our lunch, since we brought our kids, as always, we have them settled at the hot spring pool then we proceeded to the trekking to the waterfalls. At first, we really thought the whole pool will be like the one we experienced in Mainit hot springs in Malabuyoc, Cebu which the temperature reaches around 40 degrees celcius, but it’s not! In mainit hot spring, the whole pool’s temperature reaches 42 degrees celcius but here in esoy hot spring, it is probably just around 25 degrees celcius (well, at least during the time we where there as some locals told us it would reach more than 40 degrees).
The real adventure starts NOW!!!
After our kids and our mom, who is 66 years old already, settled down at the pool, the four (4) of us left the pool and asked the care takers to contact the guide to inform them that we are ready for the real fun and adventure. So we did start!!! The first challenge was to cross the hanging bridge. Crossing this bridge may look as simple as just crossing any bridge, but I assure you, it is not! You’ll need to balance your body weight and all to avoid swings on the hanging bridge.
After we crossed the bridge, i would say and probably it is safe to say that it is now the start of mini – canyoneering adventure. After our first climb or crawl at the rock formations along Cantingko river, the first thing that crossed my mind was, it should have been great and more fun if Boss Ely and Maam Rose was here with us (sad to say, the team wasn’t complete this time). Anyways, It took us just around 1 hour to finish the trekking and made the jump on top of the waterfalls but still it’s really fun. It may not be as good as the canyoneering adventure that we had in Alegria and Badian but still, it’s worth it! For those who are not in to extreme adventure, this one will serve just fine. You don’t need to be an expert in swimming as there will be a guide and a life vest during the trekking. For us, the extreme challenge was the climb on the hill in preparation for the jump on the falls. The hill was too steep and slippery.
