Siquijor Island is approximately 5-6 hours trip from Cebu City. If you haven’t read our previous blog for Getting to Siquijor Island from Cebu City, please click here. Since we are planning for a side trip to the whale shark watching adventure in Oslob, Cebu and the adventure could take at least an hour, we’ll have to depart early and hire a tourist transport or a Cebu Rent-a-van/car. If our trip is scheduled on a weekday and not during the summer vacations or Christmas vacations, we can depart Cebu City at exactly 4:00AM but if on a weekend and especially during summer or Christmas vactions, we’ll have to depart a little earlier than that, probably 3:30AM. It will be very risky if we’ll take bus since often bus schedules are delayed therefore we may not hit our timeline.
Driving to barangay tan-awan in Oslob, Cebu where the whale shark watching adventure is located will only take around 2 hours if departs as early as 4:00AM therefore by 6:00AM we will be at the area in time for the opening of the registration and briefings for the whale shark watching encounter. The time it will take to register depends on the number of guests or tourists as you may have to fall in line for a couple of minutes. Once you have registered and bought ticket(s), you’ll now be joining other tourists at the briefing area to discuss the do’s and don’ts while doing the whale shark watching. Briefing is just short, it won’t even reach 10 minutes then after that, you’ll be preparing for the gears (snorkels and life jacket) then a 5 minute boat ride to the actual whale shark watching area. The duration for the actual encounter with the whale shark in Oslob is just 30 minutes tops to give way to other tourists who are there as well for the swimming with the gentle giants in Oslob experience.
Overall time consumed for the whale shark watching adventure in Oslob, Cebu should be less than an hour if our time won’t be spent on falling in line and waiting but of course it should be expected. If everything goes smooth and with just minimal waiting time, we can still have time to take our breakfast here. There are a couple of options for breakfast. Probably the most popular set meal is the native breakfast which are “puto and sikwate with a slice of mango”. Unfortunately I don’t know how to describe “puto” so just see the picture above. As for the sikwate, it’s a chocolate drink made from cacao tree/seed. Of course there are other foods as well like hot dogs, bacons, fried eggs, pork chicken and more.
Probably by this time (again if everything runs according to plan), we have only consumed a total of 4 hours or around 8:00AM already. So it’s time to change clothes and depart for Lilo-an wharf. It will only take 30 minute drive from the whale shark watching area in tan-awan, oslob to lilo-an wharf in Santander. So before 09:00AM, we will be at the lilo-an wharf already and we still have enough time to buy ticket for the ferry and rest. Ferry departure time of Maayo Shipping Lines from Lilo-an Wharf to Larena Port in Siquijor Island is at 10:00AM.
If you have your own car and wishes to bring it to siquijor island like what we always do since 2 years ago, it would be great. But ferry fare for car/van is a bit expensive.
